Generating a great website is just the beginning to having an Internet presence.  If no-one can find your site when searching then you might as well not spend any time making your website.

One of the most important things that you can do to have an effective web site is have other web sites link to it.  Usually, there are 2 types of backlinks, one-way and reciprocal.  Both are easy and effective ways to build traffic but one is much more powerful than the other - one-way links.

Reciprocal links are when you link to a site and that web site also links back to your website.  This was the most popular type of linking a few years ago and is still widely used.  Many site owners get great traffic by using in a link exchange service or system built specifically for reciprocal backlinks.  A link exchange is a group of people that exchange links with each other.

One-way links are simply a link to your website from another website without the exchange.  Sometimes you may agree to exchange backlinks to different web sites which is called an n-way link exchange.  Google truly favors this type of linking compared to reciprocal linking.  But, it is very difficult to get a one-way backlink.  There are three main strategies for receiving one-way links: submit your website to directories, give away something needed that includes your link, pay for a link on another high ranking page.

1. Creating backlinks by submitting your website to directories is often free unless you decide to upgrade.  Directories are special web sites that list other websites that viewers may be interested in and are usually hand edited so they have some additional authoritative weight in the search engine formulas.  There are software programs that can help with the dull procedure of filling out directory web forms.  One of the least expensive is Directory Site Submitter.

Directory Site Submitter will let you set up and manage multiple projects with multiple websites per project and then help you submit to over 400 free directories.  The backlinks from these sites will be valuable for SEO reasons more than actual traffic.

2. One of the best solutions is to give away something valuable that has your link.  Articles are very common because so many website owners need web content.  They are cheap to produce and are effective at drawing one-way links to your web site.

3. Stay away from buying links on web sites for SEO purposes.  It can cost up to $100 a month or more to put your link on a high pagerank site and it still may not be counted in the search engine algorithm.  Google has repeatedly said that purchasing direct links will not be of benefit for SEO.  But, you might still use this technique to drive traffic from a high traffic site to your website.

The truth of the matter is that if you are working to build  long term income, it is going to take a while before your website becomes profitable.  A long term strategy for a site may take six months or even a year for it to start creating income.  It is also important to start getting back links right away.  Choose your links cautiously.  Verify that you are not getting links from low level sites, scraper web sites or backlinks from bad neighborhoods.

Keep this in mind when trying to post invisible text (i.e. white text on a white background). This kind of behavior can get you banned from a search engine.

3. You will start by registering a domain name, which should reflect what your site about. Keep it short, as long as it’s somehow related to your site. Being more specific can help.  You could choose to name the page after one of your products or services, for example. Another method is to get a sub domain of a popular domain. This will generally help you get indexed more quickly though it will not appear quite as professional to your visitors. There is a trade of here, sub domains are quicker (and generally cheaper), but domain names are more memorable, and, in the long run, better for your indexing. 

4. Many search engines judge web page importance on the number and quality of incoming links from other sites. You should link to some related sites, but not too many.  Don’t overdo incoming links either, and keep them related your site’s content. It’s also good to get sites to use your keywords as the text of these links.

5. Having keyword density in all of your content is good, but keep in mind that each search engine has its own requirements when it comes to how many times that a keyword or phrase should be in the content for the page to be relevant. Somewhere between 5 and 8 percent is a roughly optimal level – but this isn’t always possible, and you shouldn’t force it. Don’t overdo it, or the search engines might mark you down.
